Surviving the Holidays: Dealing With Your Emotions
The holiday season can magnify grief in ways we don’t expect. Chapter 1 of Surviving the Holidays reminds us that it’s okay to feel what we feel — sadness, anger, loneliness, or even moments of joy that feel out of place. When a loved one is gone, every song, scent, or tradition can stir deep emotions. These “emotional ambushes,” as the book calls them, often arrive without warning and can leave us feeling vulnerable or confused. Rather than avoiding or suppressing our pain, Surviving the Holidays encourages us to name our emotions honestly and invite God into them, trusting that He is present even in the moments when our hearts ache the most.
One powerful tool from the chapter is the idea of writing a grief letter. This simple practice allows us to express our emotions and communicate with family and friends about what we’re truly experiencing. It can be as straightforward as saying, “I may cry this year,” or “I might need to leave early.” Sharing how others can best support you — and what may be too difficult — helps everyone navigate the season with compassion and understanding. When we give ourselves permission to grieve honestly, we create space for healing, hope, and even gratitude to take root again.
